The long warm days of Summer makes it the perfect opportunity to discover Cumbria’s natural wonders and unique magic.
Amid the splendour of the lakes and the majestic mountains, Summer is the time to make the most of Cumbria’s outdoor pleasures, from fell walking and coastal walks to site seeing and al-fresco dining. What could be better than sitting beside a glistening lake enjoying a fabulous lunch and a glass of your favourite tipple? It could provide a moment to reflect on the charms and fascination of a region that attracts visitors, walkers, artists, writers and poets from every corner of the world.
Cumbria is truly a special place in the summer, inspiring our celebrated food and drink producers to find new ways to tempt us with their mouth-watering creations. And not to be outdone, our talented community of artists, designers and craftspeople are also busily fashioning their latest works of original art, quality jewellery and imaginative gifts.
Made in Cumbria member Sophie Martin is a local freelance artist and illustrator based on the edge of the Lake District who loves to travel and to draw on location to really capture the immediate energy of the place. Sophie’s inspiration comes from the world around her, whether it be from new and inspiring places or from keenly observing the apparently ordinary and familiar in everyday situations.

Salmon salads are the perfect dish for the summer season, they are delicious light, fresh and healthy, and ideal for that perfect picnic!
Thirty-five years ago, Maryport firm Grants Oak Smoked began supplying single sides of smoked salmon to Lake District hoteliers. Now their family firm supplies restaurants, retail chains, delis, hotels and catering companies across the globe. They only use suppliers with the highest aquaculture and environmental standards, and cure and smoke all their salmon the traditional way, using real oak chips. They have recently showcased their multi award-winning Rope Hung Traditionally Smoked Salmon to passengers in BA’s first class lounge at Heathrow’s Terminal 5.
The product also recently won its second Gold medal at the international Monde Selection Food Awards, to sit alongside its three star Great Taste award. For menu ideas, see their Instagram page at grants _oak_ smoked.
There is nothing better on a hot summers evening (or day!) than a cool drink to keep you refreshed and buzzing – and gin is the reigning champion of the summer season for a very good reason! Its light, herbal and fruity blends easily mix with many tonics and juices to create amazing cocktails, punches and martinis.
Cumbria is home to some fantastic gin producers; Shed 1 are Ulverston’s award winning Gin Distillery based on the outskirts of the Lake District and run by husband and wife team Andy & Zoe Arnold-Bennett. Their range of gins includes Cuckold’s Revenge which has received a Great Taste Award & is featured in the latest edition of “101 Gins to Try Before You Die” by spirits guru, Ian Buxton. It’s named after Andy’s character, the cuckolded Master Ford in Merry Wives, which he toured with Northern Broadsides in 2016.

Founded in 2006 and celebrating 12 years in business, Lakeland Artisan Artisan pride themselves on producing delicious handcrafted local products which showcase the very best that the Lake District and Cumbria have to offer. If you prefer a great tasting juice, Eva’s Organics Apple Juice will really quench your thirst! Made in the heart of the north Cumbrian countryside with apples harvested from their orchard, Mike and Debbie Simpson press the finest, freshly hand selected organic apples in small batches to create a juice bursting with crisp and refreshing flavour.
Many associate candles with wintertime, the warm, soft hypnotic glow and gentle scent cheering up a cold dark winters evening… but candles are extremely seasonal. Fill your house and garden with glorious scents from light and fresh to crisp and zesty from two of the county’s candle producers.
Lakeland Lights Company make luxury scented candles inspired by the Lake District. Jo and James, a husband and wife team who love making candles. Having spent more than a decade living overseas in Hong Kong and Iceland, they decided to return to the UK. Whilst the fast pace and excitement of living in Hong Kong was incredible, they never had the time to indulge in creative endeavours, where they could create and make products that they were passionate about. This is how Lakeland Lights Company was born!

Pintail Candles is celebrating 25 years of candle making and was the first candle maker in the UK to produce candle tins, a product which they have been associated with ever since.
They’re based in Flookburgh, a small fishing village in South Lakeland where cockles, mussels and the famous Morecambe Bay shrimps are harvested. The bay is also home to a wide variety of wildfowl. As a keen nature enthusiast, owner James named his business after the beautiful Pintail duck which nests in the surrounding wetlands and marshes.
The idyllic landscape of Cumbria is the ideal place to find the workshops and studios of talented artists producing award-winning and highly original hand-crafted sculptures in wood, stone and metals. And summer is the perfect time to go and explore their work.
Based in a beautiful stone barn in Witherslack Woods, Charlie Whinney Charlie Whinney Studio exists to explore the relationships between materials, people and the environment to create bespoke furniture and one-off sculptures, specialising in steam-bending.
Charlie has designed and made for individuals and large organisations around the world including, and most notably created Mountains We Made to mark the Lake District’s UNESCO status, which is currently installed at Grizedale Forest Visitor’s Centre.
The studio was delighted to be invited by the RHS to attend the Chelsea Flower Show this year and take one of their coveted ‘Artisan Studios, they created a very special garden in collaboration with garden designer and writer Tom Attwood.

Smith & Pulse is a family run business based in Appleby. Owned by David Balmer and his partner Kaya Bennett, Smith & Pulse are a skilled and talented duo of blacksmiths who expertly produce bespoke metalwork, all designed, smithied and welded, in steel and aluminium.
They create both artistic and practical solutions for estates, gardens homes, farms, bars, boats and more.
