Sophie’s inspiration comes from the world around her, whether it be from new and inspiring places or from keenly observing the apparently ordinary and familiar in everyday situations.

“I love drawing animals and am at my happiest following sheep or chickens around a field attempting to capture them with my pen before they scamper away”.

On location I try to capture the immediate energy of the place I’m drawing.” SOPHIE MARTIN – Artist & Illustrator

Many associate candles with wintertime, the warm, soft hypnotic glow and gentle scent cheering up a cold dark winters evening… but candles are extremely seasonal. Fill your house and garden with glorious scents from light and fresh to crisp and zesty from two of the county’s candle producers.

Lakeland Lights Company make luxury scented candles inspired by the Lake District. Jo and James, a husband and wife team who love making candles. Having spent more than a decade living overseas in Hong Kong and Iceland, they decided to return to the UK. Whilst the fast pace and excitement of living in Hong Kong was incredible, they never had the time to indulge in creative endeavours, where they could create and make products that they were passionate about. This is how Lakeland Lights Company was born!

We take our inspiration from the unique qualities of the beautiful Cumbrian landscape. Our scents are expertly blended to capture the essence of each location.” JAMES LONG – Owner, Lakeland Lights Company

Pintail Candles is celebrating 25 years of candle making and was the first candle maker in the UK to produce candle tins, a product which they have been associated with ever since.

They’re based in Flookburgh, a small fishing village in South Lakeland where cockles, mussels and the famous Morecambe Bay shrimps are harvested. The bay is also home to a wide variety of wildfowl. As a keen nature enthusiast, owner James named his business after the beautiful Pintail duck which nests in the surrounding wetlands and marshes.
