Handmade textiles have been a thriving cottage industry in Cumbria for thousands of years, making use of wool from native breeds, such as Herdwick, and other natural materials.
The age-old skills of weaving and dyeing fabrics are still to found in the workshops of artisan designers such as Cable and Blake, who specialise in a range of wonderfully rich Herdwick upholstery fabrics and finishes.
Hesta Scene, an alternative shop and gallery based in Caldbeck, features a clothing and homeware range made by textile designer Julie Coughlan. Her highly original and contemporary designs reflect her passion for recreating the colours and shades of the Lake District and the Cumbrian countryside. The shop is must for visitors looking for something different or unusual to take home as a gift or keepsake.
