Ceramics Courses at Bitter Beck Pottery

Bitter Beck Pottery, CockermouthOur courses are for adults, and are held at Bitter Beck Pottery in Cockermouth. This is a pleasant and inspiring environment in which to learn the joys of making studio ceramics. The pottery is small so courses are restricted to four people, providing individual attention.

We offer weekly evening and morning courses to beginners and improvers living locally. In the summer months I hold Clay Days on Wednesdays, when both visitors and locals can book a session from one hour to all day. Short courses can be arranged for small groups on request.

Weekly courses of 7 sessions are usually held on Wednesdays in the autumn, winter and spring.

Students unable to attend a session can usually come on a Friday or Saturday by arrangement.

All weekly courses are £140, which covers tuition, use of the pottery facilities and equipment, materials and firings.

Beginners

The aim is to give a structured introduction to the skills and techniques used in studio ceramics, so that students can go on to design and build their own pieces. No previous experience is required. The courses will cover the processes used in studio ceramics, hand building methods, and simple decorative techniques. You can expect to make at least six pieces and enjoy the experience.

Improvers

Improvers have already completed an introduction to studio ceramics course and have some knowledge of basic techniques. The aim is to provide an opportunity to practice and develop skills and techniques. Students are helped to design, plan and execute their own pieces in their own styles.

Tutors

Joan Hardie owns and runs Bitter Beck Pottery where she sells her decorative ceramics, based on natural textures, forms and colours. She is a qualified and experienced teacher and will be the main tutor. Jack Hardie teaches throwing and turning pots on the wheel. Joan and Jack started making pottery over 35 years ago, learning the basic techniques at evening classes and then setting up a home studio.

Bookings

Contact Joan Hardie to check dates and availability and for a booking form. A £50 deposit is required to book a place, with the balance payable at the first session. Payment can be by debit/credit card at the pottery or by cheque or cash. Deposits will be returned if a course is cancelled. If students are unable to attend having booked a place, the deposit will be returned if a replacement can be found.

You will need to wear old clothes and bring an apron or overall and a notebook. Our Health and safety policy will be explained at the start of the course and must be followed. Anyone suffering from breathing problems or skin allergies should consult their doctor before booking a place.
